St Mary’s Parish Church in Hampton recently held a ‘Memorial and Thanksgiving Service’ organised by the staff of G S Keates Funeral Directors in Hampton Hill. Reverend Derek Winterburn led the hour-long service which included carols, readings, solos and a homily given by Deacon Duncan Macpherson of St Theodore’s Roman Catholic Church.
The high point was the lighting of individual candles by members of the congregation, each one signifying the passing of a loved one. Then, with the church lights dimmed, the singing of ‘Silent Night’ was particularly moving.
Manager, Richard Leachman said: “The evening was well received by those who attended, who found the service a poignant start to their Christmas. The candle represented a space at their festive table. No-one will be forgotten in their homes”.
